A notarized document is legalized when the relevant foreign consulate in Canada certifies it for use in the foreign country. Before legalizing a notarized document, consulates will generally require that the document to be authenticated by the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, however, some consulates may accept provincial authentication or the notarized document on its own.
As with authenticating a notarized document, legalizing it is a fairly straight-forward process in which you take the document to the foreign consulate and pay the required administrative fee. However, if you prefer us to handle the process for you, please contact us and we would be pleased to do so. To find the contact information for a particular consulate or embassy, please visit the directories listed on our links page.
